One of the most common questions I get as a quilter is, "Why do quilts cost so much?". Believe me, I wondered the same thing until I sat down and made my own. To help breakdown the cost and time it takes to make these treasures, I'm going to share a sample of what a quilt would cost from start to finish.
This sample is an estimate of what a 65x65 Throw Quilt would cost.
Materials:
6 yards for the top @ $1 a yard- $66
5 yards backing @ $13 a yard-$65
2 yards batting @11 a yard- $22
5/8 yard binding @11 a yard- $6.88
Total cost of materials, before tax- $159.88
Construction
* labor based on $10/hr*
Marking the top; Includes preparing the fabric, cutting the pieces, sewing the blocks, aligning the rows and adding borders 50 hours @ $10/hr= $500
Assembling the Quilt "sandwich" 3 hours @ $10/hr= $30
Quilting on a Domestic machine *charged by square inch in a simple, lined design* 4225 square inches x $.015= $63.38
Thread for Quilting- $15
Total cost for construction, before tax- $768.26
Finishing
Making the Binding- 2 hours x $10/hr= $20
Attaching the Binding- 10 hours x $10/hr= $100
Total finishing costs- $120
The total cost, before taxes, for this quilt comes to $888.26
Some things to remember:
The type of fabric will determine the price, as well as sales and shopping around, this price point varies greatly from quilt to quilt.
The more detailed the quilt top, the more intricate a quilt design, the time needed to prepare it will also vary.
Work with your quilter to price shop for fabric and discuss the type of block you want so you know how long it will take to put together.
Each quilt is different so no two quilts will be the same cost.
